'He was very honest and up front about it and spoke with great regret about it. 'I asked George about the charges the second time we met and he told me all about his arrest, the events leading up to his arrest, his time spent in prison on remand, his bail application, his reporting obligations and the date for his sentencing,' she wrote. Ms Schonstein wrote that when she learnt through friends about the charges Gerges was facing she confronted him. 'I was becoming paranoid, knew it would probably end badly but couldn't get away from it.' 'He said he realises now he was heavily addicted to cocaine.' 'He said at the time he knew he had a problem with cocaine but he did not feel he could stop,' psychologist Neil Ballardie wrote in a report. The court heard Gerges told a psychologist he began using cocaine regularly aged 29 and became 'caught up in a world he had never previously been exposed to.'
